The Great Gatsby Told by Nick Caraway, and written by Scott F. Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is a classic novel that gives readers a glimpse inside the lives of the wealthy during the roaring 20s. The story follows the lives of Jay Gatsby, a man of new money, Daisy Buchanan, a married girl of old money, and Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s deceitful husband. Jay Gatsby is a man of mystery, with seemly unlimited funds, who throws ridiculous outrageous parties for no apparent reason. It’s learned that he has become the rich man is he, to impress his love, Daisy Buchanan, whom he fell in love with five years ago. Imagery and color is used to distinguish the difference between social classes. The wealthy are shown in a more colorful and vibrant atmosphere, while the working or low class are shown in a bland, colorless, dirty environment, like the Valley of Ashes. In one scene, Gatsby drives by a group of workers, who look rugged and unclean, in his shiny custom Rolls Royce, showing the contrast between the two groups. Not only was there a gap between the rich and poor, but the newly rich and the old rich. Gatsby had just recently acquired his wealth, while Tom and Daisy had inherited their wealth. Many of the characters in The Great Gatsby were in disbelief and disapproved of the newly wealthy, such as Gatsby, believing that all sorts of crazy lies about him. This was displayed mainly through spoken dialogue. People often said Gatsby got his money in outrageous ways, that he was â€Å"the cousin of an evil German king† or â€Å"a german spy†, to even a â€Å"murderer†. Gatsby was judged mainly by the people with old money, which separated him from that group of the upper class.
